Marin Sun Farms

Updated: Jan 15, 2020

Point Reyes Station, California

I learned about the Weston A. Price Foundation during my first office visit to Dr. Thomas Cowan, MD. The organization is lead by Sally Fallon Morell, the author of Nourishing Traditions. I left Dr. Cowan's office with the book in hand and immediately started to integrate the dietary principles by making homemade bone broth and kombucha, drinking raw milk, and eating pasture-raised animal products. Within a couple of months, I founded the San Francisco Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation and attended the yearly annual conference. I organized a tour of Marin Sun Farms as our chapter's very first farm tour in April of 2005. I had just started to take digital photographs while in Morocco earlier that year. I captured these photos while in Marin County where Marin Sun Farms is located. This was the very first time I'd seen pasture-raised chickens, turkeys and cows! I was purchasing their eggs at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Francisco and loved seeing where they came from. The cows you see in the distance fertilize the field with their manure. The chickens poke in it and spread it around as they eat the larvae that form. The pasture is enriched and the cycle continues. Grass > manure > larvae. A mutually supportive system. Consider this in contrast to confined animals fed an unnatural diet. "Know the hands that feed you" became one of my mottos. I captured David Evans, the owner, who happens to be born on the same day I am: July 16. 1965. This tour ignited my love of farm tours and many more to come!
